Switching Guide
Why should I switch ?
Get Smart Bills do not supply your electricity and gas so we won’t be sending you a bill. Your bills will be sent by the energy suppliers, like they probably are now.
Switching to Get Smart Bills will save you money, and not just because some energy suppliers are cheaper than others, but also because the best deals are almost always only on offer to new customers.
If you’ve been tempted by a deal from the energy supplier you’ll invariably find that they then rely on you staying with them once the initial offer stops being competitive. Most people have busy lives, and remembering to check the prices of energy isn’t something many people will do, even though the savings available are substantial.
With Get Smart Bills, you get the best deals on offer, and we constantly check the markets for you, allowing you to switch again when better deals come along.
Who should I switch to?
You might have read or heard that a certain energy provider is the cheapest in the country, but the price you actually pay will depend on where you live. So the cheapest in the UK might not be the cheapest for you. With Get Smart Bills you get the options and tariffs that are available to you.
If you use our Online Comparison you’ll see the deals on offer to you today. From there it’s an easy process to complete the online switch.
What about the tariff options?
The tariff depends on how much energy you typically use, how you pay your bill, and other options such as online account management.
If you switch to a package where you pay your bills by direct debit, and take paperless billing you will save even more. But you don’t have to take-up these offers if they don’t suit you or your lifestyle, or your finances.
Tariffs where you enter your own meter readings online can also mean you save even more, and a combined deal where you take electricity and gas through the same energy supplier will almost always give you the best savings.
But you don’t have to take any of these options if you don’t want to. With Get Smart Bills you can pick from a range of tariffs and options, including things like Green Energy.
What do I tell my existing Energy Supplier ?
You don’t have to contact your existing energy supplier at all. But our experience shows that to ensure the smoothest possible switchover, you should really give them 28 days notice of your switch. You can telephone them, but you may find it helpful to put it in writing too.
Do I need to prepare for the switch ?
You should make sure you have paid any outstanding energy bills sent by your old supplier. If you don’t, then this may prevent you switching.
Your new energy provider will inform you of the exact date of the switchover, and you should take a meter reading then. Both for gas and electricity if you are switching your utilities.
When the final bill from the old supplier, and the first bill from the new supplier arrive, you can check their readings against your own, just to make sure that all is in order. Make sure you also check that the Meter Number printed on both bills is the same.
When will the switch take place ?
Normally it takes four to six weeks from the point as which you process your switch through Get Smart Bills. We do process your switch as soon as we receive it, but the energy companies can take their time. You will receive a letter from you new supplier advising you of the exact date of the switch.
What bills can I expect to receive ?
Your old supplier will send you a bill marked “final bill” or “final energy statement”. After that you will only get bills from your new supplier. You do not get a bill from Get Smart Bills.
Do I have to pay to switch ?
No, it won’t cost you a thing. You will need to pay your final bill from your old supplier though, and if you pay using a standing order there might be money owed, or there might be money due to you. It depends on how accurate your bills were, especially if they’d been estimated. But you won’t pay any more because of the switch, and you’ll soon be making great savings.
